Commissioning Manager

Position Summary:

The Commissioning and Start Up Manager is responsible for the successful execution of commissioning and start-up activities of Oil & Gas Projects. This position will provide leadership to the project staff and all organizations on site and directs staff in the daily/weekly planning process.

This role will represent TDE in client interactions related to commissioning and start-up activities on an overseas project on a contract basis.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Ensure successful pre-commissioning, commissioning, and start-up of the facility.
  • Manage the overall schedule for development and implementation of commissioning within the assigned project.
  • Monitor commissioning activities for progress, adherence to procedures, safe work processes, data sheet completion and proper test equipment.
  • Ensure that all safety procedures are followed and safety standards are met during commissioning and start-up activities on site.
  • Ensure that adequate resources required for commissioning and start-up activities are available based on the schedule and budget.
  • Demonstrate leadership in a team based environment and act as a mentor and source or technical resources.
  • Ensure that all owner, and regulatory safety codes, requirements and standards are being complied with within assigned areas of commissioning.
  • Support and facilitate a highly effective, collaborative environment with seamless, open communication across all stakeholder groups.
  • Review schedule to ensure that sufficient resources are allotted to each team to complete their activities in accordance with the current schedule.
  • Responsible for allocating resources and making decisions during project execution.
  • Maintain ongoing communication with owner representatives, project managers, and subcontractors and construction crews.
  • Ensure all changes to specifications, work scope and drawings are documented.
  • Liaise with Project Managers to adequately address challenges at the work site, schedule concerns or job performance issues.
  • Direct implementation of project construction, health & safety, and loss control procedures and is responsible for ensuring that the project meets the agreed safety targets.
  • Effectively lead the sequential activities of pre commissioning, commission and start up with multi discipline technical expertise in oil and gas processing plants.


  • Support, participate in, and help drive the overall company safety program, safety awareness, and safety targets.
  • Demonstrate and enforce all Safety Management System requirements.
  • Ensure all personnel know the location of all assembly or evacuation points.
  • Consistently demonstrate “Safety Leadership” qualities.


  • 20+ years of progressive experience on commissioning and start-up of oil and gas projects as a technical subject matter expert evolving into leadership role in a planning, coordinating or managing capacity.
  • Experienced in modularization concepts and installation planning.
  • Experienced in all phases of project execution from estimate to closeout.
  • Proven ability to produce high quality work while facing competing priorities and strict deadlines.
  • In depth understanding of construction execution and calculations.
  • Demonstrate an ability to prioritize activities and stay focused in a dynamic ever changing environment.
  • Demonstrate an ability to develop project “Key Performance Indicators” and to track / close inspection tests, punch list items, loop tests and all aspects of commissioning and start up.
  • Ability to interpret complex design drawings and concisely explain them to experienced and non-experienced personnel.
  • Knowledge of MS Office suite (emphasis on Word, PowerPoint, & Excel), Lotus Notes, Acrobat Pro, and other software systems.
  • Ability to foresee risk and apply risk good management.


  • Excellent written communication skills.
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills – must be able to interact successfully with all levels of staff, from Managers to Senior Executives, with a positive, enthusiastic attitude.
  • Ability to develop strong positive internal and external relationships.
  • Ability to demonstrate sensitivity toward client engagements and confidentiality when interacting with TDE leadership.

Work Environment

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee will be working in a variety of environments and will be required to be located in the field for the duration of the project. This could be in Alberta, British Columbia, Saskatchewan or Internationally.
