Control Systems Technologist/Engineer

Position Summary :

The role of the Control Systems Technologist/Engineer is to design and implement control systems to facilitate engineered and fabricated oil and gas production equipment.

Duties & Responsibilities :

  • Design and implement plant control systems.
  • Programming the control systems.
  • Ensure the control systems will be functional prior to their departure from the TDE shop.
  • Specifying, selecting, and purchasing control panels or components for gas processing equipment.
  • Involves the extensive inter-discipline co-ordination during design / engineering.
  • Co-ordinate the work between office, shop and provide the assistance during the construction and commissioning.
  • Develop and review the P&IDs, cause & effect diagrams, alarm & trip setpoint list, control loop narrative.
  • Design, select and purchase of control systems and software for assigned projects.
  • Create and maintain the control system architecture, I/O list & data mapping, instrument wiring diagrams and logic diagrams.
  • Read the process flow diagrams, heat & material balances, hazardous area classification drawings, plant and piping layouts, piping isometrics, vessels/process equipment datasheets etc.
  • Calculate the power and other required utility for control design.
  • Program the interface between DCS & PLC systems and coordinate the design with MMI programmer to ensure the smooth interfacing.
  • Troubleshoot and test the Control panels and BMS panels.
  • Design and configure the graphical interfaces, trends, alarms, logs and screen hierarchies.
  • Design and configuration of control hardware, and logic for factory acceptance tests.
  • Provide the technical assistance to other disciplines in Controls.
  • Provide progress updates to project engineer and / or engineering management.
  • Pre-commission the skids to verify field device through to DCS / PLC and relay logic prior to shipping to reduce on-site problems.
  • Participate in on-site field startups when necessary.

Experience

  • Minimum 2 years experience in a mid-sized fabrication company
  • Minimum 5 years experience working as a designer/Engineer in Oil & Gas Industry.
  • Proficiency in the use of Computer-Aided Engineering Software in an engineering design.
  • Must be able to load the operating system on a computer workstation and load on the control system software and integrate the system onto a LAN without assistance.
  • Must have necessary skills and knowledge to program PLC and DCS systems.
  • Good analytical, engineering problem solving skills.
  • Knowledge of various Instrumentation, PLC/DCS manufacturers and hardware.
  • Skills in ACAD and E-Plan software would be an asset.
  • Experience with HAZOP, SIL, LOPA Studies would be asset.
  • Knowledge and experience applying codes and standards such as IEC, ATEX, CSA, NEC, ISA and IEC 61131-3.
  • Knowledge of Safety Integrity Level (SIL) and Safety Instrumented Systems (SIS) would be an asset.
  • Knowledge of various electrical components including MCCs, PLC panels, VFD’s, electrical switchgear and motors. Understanding of the methods required to make all these systems function together in an operating plant.
  • Proficient knowledge of industry best practices.
  • Proven ability to produce high quality work while facing competing priorities and strict deadlines.
  • Demonstrate an ability to prioritize activities and stay focused in a dynamic ever changing environment.
  • Demonstrate an ability to develop departmental “Key Performance Indicators”.
  • Knowledge of MS Office suite (emphasis on Word, PowerPoint, & Excel), Lotus Notes, Acrobat Pro, and other software systems.

Education

  • Diploma or degree from a technical institute or university specializing in Control systems design/engineering / Instrumentation / Electrical.
  • E.I.T. or P.Eng Designation would be asset.
