Project Engineer

Position Summary

The role of the Project Engineer is to control and coordinate project resources and be a liaison between the Project Manager and the assigned multi-discipline Project Team. The Project Engineer ensures that all project deliverables comply within the requirements of the project and align with the parameters outlined in the Project Plan. The Project Engineer can also oversee and manage small to medium size projects.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Coordinating the activities of engineering and design groups assigned to project team.
  • Ensuring engineering is done with accuracy and to high standards.
  • Managing projects to meet client specifications, deadlines and budget.
  • Ensuring equipment operates efficiently, is designed in accordance with TDE and client specifications, will be delivered on time and within budget.
  • Oversee detailed process / mechanical design.
  • Coordinate and oversee various disciplines involved in project (ensure their awareness of all ongoing work). Disciplines can include: design drafting, piping, instrumentation, electrical, control systems, mechanical & process engineering, as well as production.
  • Equipment design (vessels, towers, exchangers, rotating equipment, etc).
  • Requisition of major equipment (specification of buyout equipment, issuing of RFQ’s, quote comparison, vendor selection).
  • Review client specifications; note and confirm exceptions and pass onto project team in a timely fashion (design group, fabrication shop, instrumentation & valving, controls and electrical).
  • Ensure design information is adequately controlled and provide to the project team as required. Coordination of drawings and purchasing to ensure work gets to shop in time.
  • Review of drawings to ensure proper design and minimize conflicts.
  • Approval and sign off of fabrication drawings.
  • Drawing submittals to fabrication shop and client.
  • Monitor fabrication / construction and rectify any problems.
  • Provide startup support and trouble shooting within scope of supply.
  • Assist and advise other engineers / technologists.
  • Coordinate client communications and meetings.


  • 3-5 years experience in Project Engineering.
  • Eng. designation through APEGA.
  • Proficient knowledge of industry best practices.
  • Proven ability to produce high-quality work while facing competing priorities and strict deadlines.
  • Demonstrate an ability to prioritize activities and stay focused in a dynamic ever changing environment.
  • Demonstrate an ability to develop and adhere to departmental “Key Performance Indicators”.
  • Knowledge of MS Office suite (emphasis on Word, PowerPoint, & Excel), Lotus Notes, Acrobat Pro, and other software systems.

  • BSc. in Chemical or Mechanical Engineering.

Work Environment

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee will be working in a variety of environments including office and shop visits.
  • Can involve high stress due to workload and timelines. Must be able to multi-task and prioritize workload appropriately to meet deadlines. Due to the industry in which TDE is involved and the position, there will be opportunity to travel. Typically travel is to foreign countries therefore incumbent must have all necessary documentation for this type of travel. Travel is usually for sales, project bidding, project management or for plant startup purposes.
  • Interaction with many departments is a requirement of this position. Bidding on potential projects or project management necessitates a team effort and contact typically extends to the following departments; drafting, instrumentation & controls, electrical design, other engineering groups and shop fabrication groups. Incumbent must be able to communicate well with others, act as a liaison between the departments as well as with suppliers and clients. Must also possess conflict resolution skills and be able to manage the differing personalities between these groups to meet project needs and deadlines.
